How does dental prosthetics work at home?

Is prosthetics performed at home?

Teeth can be treated or implants placed only in a dental office. Unfortunately, it is impossible to do this at home. The same applies to the full range of measures necessary to carry out high-quality fixed prosthetics. It is not possible to place fixed crowns and “bridges” outside the walls of the dental office.

However, some procedures can still be done by calling a dentist at home, and this opportunity often becomes a real salvation for patients who have difficulty moving without assistance or cannot leave their home on their own. First of all, these are pensioners and patients with disabilities, especially group 1. You can read about the possibilities of preferential prosthetics for certain categories of citizens in our special article.

Patients with disabilities and pensioners can call a dentist at home

Today, orthopedic dentistry offers a wide variety of different models of removable dentures to solve the problem of both partial and complete edentia. Of course, for a complete restoration of a toothless jaw, it is better to give preference to prosthetics on implants, but it is impossible to carry out such complex work outside the walls of the clinic. If the patient is non-transportable, the optimal solution for him may be to install a removable denture and call a dentist at home.

Orthopedic systems of this type are used to replace from 1-2 to all teeth in a row. The choice of a specific model depends on many factors, including the number of missing teeth, the location of the defects, the condition of the remaining elements, the degree of bone atrophy, and the financial capabilities of the patient1.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude and gratitude to the doctors of your clinic for such a professional and sensitive approach to our problem. We used the service of calling a dentist to your home and did not regret the decision at all. My father walks with great difficulty, so a doctor was invited to help him. The specialist very kindly explained everything to us, took impressions, and at the next appointment installed a brand new prosthesis, 2 weeks later. The result is excellent, he and I are very happy! Thank you again, we wish you success and good luck in your work!”

During a home visit, the doctor conducts a careful visual examination of the oral cavity, discusses possible solutions to the problem with the patient, takes impressions and selects the appropriate type of prosthetic device. Of course, for a more thorough analysis of the clinical picture, a specialist needs to study X-rays of the patient’s dental system, but they can only be taken with the help of specialized equipment within the walls of a medical institution.

X-ray examination can only be carried out in a medical institution

After taking impressions, the doctor will send them to a dental laboratory where the prosthesis will be made. This may take some time - 2-3 weeks. Some dental clinics also offer installation of a finished structure at home, but if more precise adjustment is required, the prosthetic process may take several visits.

What prosthetic procedures can a doctor perform at home?

Prosthetics for patients at home is carried out in several stages. During the first visit, the specialist examines the oral cavity and studies x-rays, if available, and talks with the patient about possible options for solving the problem. Further treatment usually develops according to the following scheme:

  1. making impressions - the doctor takes impressions, which will subsequently be transferred to the dental laboratory and will become the basis for creating a prosthetic structure. A special silicone material is used to take impressions. At the same appointment, the doctor and the patient select the shade of future teeth,
  2. laboratory stage – already in the laboratory the dental technician casts diagnostic models or creates a prosthetic structure,
  3. fitting/installation of an orthopedic system - during the next visit, the doctor tries on the finished structure in the patient’s oral cavity and, if necessary, sends the product for relocation, taking into account the identified errors. If everything is in order with the prosthesis, the doctor fixes it in the oral cavity and gives the patient detailed recommendations regarding the care of the structure.

At home, you can take dental impressions.
The above describes a universal scheme for the work of an orthopedic dentist with non-transportable patients. However, each clinical case requires individual consideration and approach.

Who can receive dental services at home?

For many disabled and elderly people, the ability to invite a dentist to work at home is the only possible option to receive the necessary medical care. Today, orthopedists have at their disposal all the technological capabilities that allow them to carry out individual procedures outside the walls of the clinic.

However, such services can be useful not only for people who are elderly or disabled, but also for patients experiencing temporary mobility difficulties. Thus, dentists make home visits, including in the following cases:

  • for broken limbs,
  • exacerbations of serious chronic diseases, such as arthritis or arthrosis,
  • recently suffered strokes and heart attacks, etc.

Dentists can go to your home if your limbs are broken.
You need to understand that prosthetics at home is a last resort measure, used only in situations where it is really necessary. Be that as it may, outside the dental clinic, the doctor is limited in his capabilities, since he does not have access to professional office equipment. If you have such a need and a good reason to take advantage, find competent honey. institutions can be found on the Internet.
